Winter can feel like a long stretch of cold, dark days – especially when you’re craving deeper connection, rest and a bit of “what’s it all for?” time. At Village Rose Yoga, we lean into the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) to soften the season.
Hygge isn’t just fairy lights and pretty mugs. It’s a way of living that honours warmth, simplicity and delight in tiny everyday moments – the candle you light before practice, the quiet drive across the lanes, the cup of tea after class when you don’t rush off.
Here’s how to begin weaving hygge into your world, Village Rose style.
1. CREATE YOUR COSY VILLAGE ROSE SANCTUARY
Lighting · Textures · Calm Corners
Think of this as bringing the studio energy home – that feeling when you walk into the warm Scandi space, see the lamps glowing, and your shoulders drop two inches.
Soften the light
Swap harsh big lights for lamps, candles, salt lamps and fairy lights. In Denmark, they use lots of small pools of light rather than one bright beam – just like our studio in the evenings.
Layer in texture
Add throws, cushions, soft socks, a cosy jumper, maybe a sheepskin or plush rug. These tactile layers send a clear message to your nervous system: you’re safe, you can rest now.
Claim a “hygge corner”
Create your own little Village Rose nook at home – a chair by a window, a corner of the sofa, a spot on the floor with your mat and bolster. Use it for reading, journalling, gentle stretches, or simply breathing with a warm drink.
Gently clear the clutter
Hygge loves simple, intentional spaces. You don’t need a full clear-out – just remove a few things that feel noisy or draining. Let what remains be items that make you smile or exhale.
When you shape your surroundings this way, you’re not just decorating – you’re giving yourself permission to slow down, turn inward and reconnect, just like you do when you step onto your mat at Village Rose Yoga. We’ve been furnishing in the Hygge style our Twilight Spa Dec 7th and 14th (spaces still available)!with Monika from @ Velvet Interiors
